Today, the Senate passed an immigration bill that promises amnesty to illegal immigrants and a massive increase in legal immigration.  If this bill becomes law, one of its predictable effects will be to drive down the wages of Americans, particularly working class Americans.  Indeed, many millions of Americans are either unemployed or underemployed.  This week, the Cleveland Plain Dealer had a story detailing how Ohio’s unemployment rate jumps from 7.2% to 11.5% if you include all those who dropped out of the labor market from 2007 to 2012.  But the most striking thing about the Senate vote is not that 14 Republicans voted for the bill, but that all 52 Democrats voted for it.  The party that professes to be for “working people” has as its highest priority the importing of foreigners at a time of mass unemployment for Americans.  If FDR had made mass immigration his highest priority during the Great Depression, our history books would record the deeds of President Alf Landon.  Now, the House Republicans are all that stand between this disastrous bill and a gala signing ceremony at the White House.
