The Zoophiles of Gaza

A video, reportedly shot by an Israeli drone over the war-torn Gaza Strip has been circulating on various social networks. The footage shows several Hamas fighters, decked out in kuffiya headscarves, having sexual intercourse with a goat or a sheep.

Stunningly revolting, but hardly surprising. After all, zoophilia was always quite common, if not widespread in Islamic societies from the Maghreb to Central Asia. Numerous non-Muslims from Uzbekistan told me about the rife practice of bestiality by young Uzbeks in villages and small towns.

Robert Fisk, a journalist known for his pro-Islam sympathies, wrote in his book The Great War for Civilization about seeing an Afghan man, standing on boxes and sodomizing a camel in broad daylight on the side of the road in Kandahar. Also in Afghanistan, a soldier was arrested after having been caught having intercourse with a donkey, explaining that he did not have enough money to get married. Apparently, this was a good enough excuse for the local police who promptly released him without charge.

University of Stockholm professor Ishtiaq Ahmed, a native of Pakistan, wrote in Pakistan's Daily Times:

In southern Punjab, much of NWFP, Sindh and Balochistan sodomy and bestiality are common among rural youths. In fact, he caught two boys trying to rape a goat in the vicinity of the mazar of Hazrat Sultan Bahu. The punishment meted out to them was 10 blows with a chhittar (shoe) each on their butts. They protested however that in many rural areas having sex with an animal was considered a rite of passage on the way to becoming full members of the male society!

The News International newspaper, also in Pakistan, reported a few years ago that a donkey was killed by its owner in an "honor killing" after being raped by another villager who managed to escape the owner's wrath. The poor donkey was declared a kari ("adulterous female") and shot dead. The zoophile was fined 110,000 Pakistani rupees (a little over $1,100).

An entry on Morocco in the International Encyclopedia of Sexuality is authored by four Arab Muslim medical doctors - Nadia Kadiri, Abderrazak Moussaid, Abdelkrim Tirraf, and Abdallah Jadid who can hardly be accused of "Islamophobia" or anti-Arab prejudice. This is what the four Muslim doctors have to say about bestiality in their country:

In the rural world, zoophilia is still very widespread and not blameworthy. With     masturbation, it constitutes an obligatory passage in the adolescent male’s apprenticeship of sexuality.

Notably, as the doctors point out, zoophilia has not been mentioned in the Koran, unlike the Pentateuch where it is harshly denounced (Leviticus 18:23 and Deuteronomy 27:21). A curious omission, wouldn't you say?

Eugene, where are the animal rights people on this one? PETA and the Humane Society should be screaming at the top of their lungs. Just where does Doris Day come down on this issue? Your column does not seem to refer to any Iranians. Is this a common practice among Shiites as well? I am surprised the Pakistanis shot the donkey instead of stoning it to death.

Louis, in Iran the punishment for bestiality is corporal punishment for the first three offenses and capital punishment for the fourth. Iran does seem to be in the minority if not unique among Islamic nations with respect to this question. In Christendom the Church considered sodomy the "unnatural vice" and most anti-sodomy laws covered bestiality as well as homosexual acts. St. Thomas Aquinas considered all sexual activity "not observing the natural manner of copulation" under the same umbrella of "the unnatural vice." Presumably this notion would have been influential in Martin Luther's denunciation of birth control as "sodomy." In one sense, the Christian and Islamic perspectives on virginity can be likened to respectively a rare pearl and a fresh apple: the former is to be guarded and spent with carefully, if at all; the latter is a good and beautiful thing but only insofar as it to be consumed with concupiscence. Thus fornication (including sex between men) can be condemned in Islam on grounds of practicality but acts with the self or between species are of no consequence. Further, the ease with which Islamic marriages can be contracted and broken suggests that in the Islamic mind prostitution may be morally permissible, whereas Christians (prior to the Reformation) regarded prostitution (and perhaps certain other acts) as moral evils but legally irrepressible on Earth. In the end it has to do with the Islamic approach to religion as an integration of the carnal world into the spiritual, whilst Christians hope someday to make our true home in another world. Ideals naturally have less of a place in the former paradigm, and accordingly so do truth and beauty for the sake of truth and beauty. All this goes to show of course that religion is not just a confessional sticker, and that ideas do have consequences.

War consists of the criminal insanity we euphemistically call "battle". Or so said an American writer who was veteran to most of the major battles of the Civil War. He wrote of the "insupportable strain upon the soldier's nervous organism." Battle was helter skelter. That- many soldiers fell on their sword to end literal, nervous breakdown. And that was prior to 'advanced' technology. As soon as World War One 'battle' was simply slaughter. Mythic man hasn't yet grasped the reality. ... Maybe the Muslims have discovered the antedote. I kid. Question: better to screw the sheep or be one? though neither savory. Mankind's usual dilemma, always in evidence in new ways. Peace is preferable wherein the animals keep the animals and are kept. No animal keeps the upper hand except in myth. Even if memory serves the Greek demi-god Ajax went mad finally and fell on his sword in the simple, old days. I'm for peace, have always said leave the sheep alone.

Thank you, Nicholas for your response. Your comments about Iranian/Shiite law regarding this matter is interesting. My next question is does this mean the Arabs brought this behavior to the regions they conquered or was Zoophilia practiced among the pagans of the area prior to the rise monotheism altogether? Also, why must Americans waste time debating the treatment of Orcas at SeaWorld when the sick Sunni's are raping their livestock? Lastly, why do Christians of the Middle East with the exception of certain Lebanese/Maronites want to be seen as Arabs when none of them were prior to being conquered by Muhhamed's armies who rode out of the Arabian Penninsula? UGH!!!!
