Sans-Culottes in the Subway

Taking the subway a few days ago, a subway ad grabbed my attention. Usually, the ads on the Big Bunelo/Big Burrito (formerly known as the Big Bagel) subway involve such gems as: "The Alliance for Gay, Lesbian, Queer, Confused, and Bi Asian Youth", or "Addicted to Marijuana: Join This Confidential Study". Well, there is a rare art exhibit advertisement, but usually, the highest cultural level the subway ads rise to is the announcement of a new David Baldacci novel.

The ad I noticed is from Manhattan Mini Storage - a company long known for its "edgy", leftist advertisements. The ad proclaimed in big print letters: "The French Aristocracy Never Saw It Coming Either".

How cute. Something for a desperate Manhattan housewife to giggle over while sipping a macchiato while her overweight Yorkie snores in her four thousand dollar handbag. But behind that noxious ad are thousands of burned and pillaged estates, whole families murdered in unspeakably cruel ways, crucified priests, and the destruction of a great country by hordes of bloodthirsty "revolutionaries". A tragedy from which France has never recovered.

Now, imagine if the same ad substituted "German Jews" or "Darfur Tribesmen" for "The French Aristocracy". The uproar would be deafening. You see, the butchered French aristocrats did not make it to the liberals' list of acceptable victims and neither did any other victims of the Left for that matter. One would not be surprised if in a decade or so, the butchered white farmers from the country formerly known as Rhodesia and South Africa are mocked like the murdered French nobles.

Witty commentary! I have tried, but never managed to fully understand that inner need to trash and ridicule French whenever one does not know how else to make a point. It will remain mystery why Americans utterly hate the same very people that help them win war with British (nowadays the BFFs) and even gifted them with the Statue of Liberty?

Thanks for the kind words. The Americans that hate the French, or more precisely, hated them during the run-up to the Iraq War were the neocons and the poor yokels who watched Fox News and listened to Hannity and Limbaugh. At one point in 2003, Jacques Chirac was the most hated figure in America, perhaps more so than Bin Laden or Saddam.

My personal moniker for my fair city is Sodom & Gomorrah on the Hudson. One of the unadulterated joys of traversing Sodom & Gomorrah's subway system is sampling the advertising wares of our local ambulance chasers who will sue for any malady or malfeasance real or imagined (preferably the latter). My personal favorite is an unnamed (fear of libel) Norman Irish law firm whose shysterism level is of truly gargantuan proportions. Demonstrating that in S&G on the Hudson unethical and immoral behavior by members of the bar is ecumenical.

How would things have gone if Metternich did not invite the French into the Holy Alliance? Most "Conservatives" that are not affiliated with this magazine are quite confused these days. Provoking and punishing Russia will not help conservatives in the future. The Catholic and Orthodox Churches really should be out in front on all of the dead (War dead as well as those who were murdered by their own governments) otherwise people will continue to use the dead for their own political purposes.
