The ancient Greeks liberated themselves from the shackles of religion and tradition to pursue a dream of democracy, equality, and human rights. Right?
Wrong. We do well to remember the Greeks as they really were: their aristocratic pursuit of virtue, their general disdain for democracy, and their strong attachments to family and religion.
This course studies the culture, literature, and political theory of the Ancient Greeks. It will dive into readings by Homer, take a look at the history of Sparta and Athens, and study the philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle.
