The “death of God” thesis encourages people to consider what we owe to other people in a world in which only human beings can help themselves, and others. In a God-forsaken universe, sharing others’ sufferings (though much less their joys) becomes a moral obligation in an “age of empathy” (Frans de Waal’s phrase), an age not of reason but of unconstrained emotion.
