The Triumph of the Insurance Companies
That cry you heard when the 216th vote was cast in favor of President Obama’s “healthcare reform” was the sound of insurance executives rejoicing before lighting their cigars with $1,000 bills. Just as Big Pharma was the chief beneficiary of President Bush’s Medicare prescription coverage bill, so Big Insurance has Barack Obama to thank for their coming years of plenty.
Beatitudes, not Platitudes
It is difficult to convey the effect these now familiar paradoxes must have had upon Jesus’ listeners. The conventional wisdom (not just of Jews but of Greeks and Romans) is turned on its head. Success is what mattered in the ancient world. Good fortune, wealth, and power were signs of divine favor.
Defining Terms
Libertarians and capitalists write as if there were some natural or divine force known as “the market.” There is no such thing. There is no MARKET, only markets, and a market is a place where people exchange goods and services, sometimes but not always for money.
Who Remembers “Guns and Butter”?
The Bush-Obama 21st century policy of guns and butter makes LBJ look like a piker. The 2009 and 2010, federal budget deficits will be monstrous even without guns. But Obama is exiting (apparently) the Iraq War in order to start two, possibly three, more wars.
