In Defense of Latin
Dr. E. Christian Kopff will address why Latin is necessary and fundamental for teaching the basics of the arts of language and preparing for a creative and free life in a free society that values consensus institutions, science and Christianity. (Discussant: Dr. Thomas Fleming)
A reception with food and drink will follow the discussion.
Saturday, October 12, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Teaching Latin: Opportunities & Concerns
Two practical talks by Dr. Fleming and Dr. Kopff, with ample time for discussion.
Topics to be addressed:
• teaching Latin using traditional methods in a modern context—where to begin, what texts are best, and how to make it stick
• the intrinsic value of Vergil’s Aeneid, its importance for understanding medieval and modern poets and thinkers, and how to teach it effectively
Friday: $5.00 per person (includes lecture and reception)
Saturday: $10.00 per person (includes half-day of lectures and discussion)
Homeschooling parents and high-school students are encouraged to register.
