Preliminary Reading List (13 February 2014)
Dante Alighieri, La Commedia
We are not requiring any specific translation, though we do have suggestions. We do not recommend the rather popular Mark Musa version, which will do in a pinch but it lacks the clarity of good prose without attaining to the level of competent verse.
We do recommend:
John Ciardi (available on Kindle or in print). Ciardi was a civilized man, competent in Italian, and among the better post WWII American poets. He was also a friend of our late editor and friend George Garret.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (in print or on Kindle), especially valuable for the notes.
Anthony Esolen, a good cultural conservative with sympathy for the text.
We shall probably be including some of Dante's earlier poetry and almost certainly the De Monarchia, but we shall keep you posted as our lecturers make their recommendations
*All prices increase $150 after May 15.
