Samuel-francis 
Samuel Francis (1947-2005) was Chronicles' political editor and a long-time monthly columnist (Principalities & Powers). He received a Ph.D. in modern history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Francis served as an assistant to Sen. John East (1981-86) and as an editorial writer for the Washington Times (1986-1995), and wrote a twice-weekly syndicated column (Creators). Ever since the exposure in the mainstream media last year of the neoconservatives as a fifth column that engineered the present boondoggle in Iraq, dragged the United States into a foreign war for the transparent benefit of Israel, and concocted what are now known to have been lies about Iraq’s “weapons of mass destruction” and Saddam Hussein’s “links” to the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the neoconservative cabal in both the Bush administration and the press has been on the defensive.

The political plum on last year’s Christmas pudding, so to speak, was l’affaire Lott, which, erupting at the birthday party for retiring Sen. Strom Thurmond in early December and continuing until Trent Lott’s less-than-voluntary resignation as Senate majority leader three weeks later, threatened to ruin Kwanza for just about everybody.
