Istanbul 2013 = Moscow 1937?(0)
After a show trial that lasted for five years and would’ve made Josef Stalin and Andrei Vyshinsky proud, 354 opponents of Tayyip Recep Erdogan’s Islamist regime have been found guilty. The main defendant, Gen. Ilker Basbug, who led Turkey’s armed forces in 2008-2010 was given a life sentence. The head of the socialist-secular nationalist Workers Party was also given a life term. Other opponents of Erdogan’s AKP party like Kemalist MP and journalist Mustafa Balbay were sentenced to lengthy terms of imprisonment.
Gen. Basbug and his co-defendants were accused of being part of the so-called “Ergenekon plot”, named after a mythical valley where the pre-Islamic ancestors of modern Turks sojourned before Asena, the Grey Wolf of Turkish lore, led them into Asia Minor. Interestingly, the seventy-year-old Basbug never openly expressed his opposition to Erdogan’s rapid Islamization of Turkey, but it was known that the distinguished general was a supporter of the moderately nationalist Kemalist CHP. Another reason for Basbug’s prosecution could be his insistence that the government guarantee the Kurds equal rights vis-a-vis the majority ethnic Turks. In short, Basbug is hardly the hardline secular Kemalist general that Erdogan’s regime painted him as.
The Ergenekon sentences come almost a year after more than 300 members of Turkey’s officer class were given prison sentences for their alleged parts in the so-called “Sledgehammer plot”. The scenario of Sledgehammer could’ve come straight from a low budget Hollywood movie: according to the prosecutors, the accused officers planned to blow up two mosques in Istanbul and shoot down a passenger airliner over the Aegean in order to spark an armed conflict with Greece. The laughable ridiculousness of this “plot” is apparent from the fact that an attack on a member of the European Union would result in armed conflict with France, Germany, and Britain, not to mention, the United States. And even the most rabidly nationalist Turkish officer would not plan anything this reckless.
What’s amazing is not the silence of the EU and the “international community” in the face of the Islamist decapitation of Turkey’s military and civilian elites, but the fact that Turkey’s military – long a bastion of secular Kemalism, allowed its leadership to be decimated by Erdogan’s Islamist regimes. In the face of the AKP’s assault, the grey wolves of Turkey’s military turned into meek lambs.
One can’t help, but compare this with Stalin’s destruction of the Red Army’s leadership in 1937-1940. Marshals and generals, famous for their exploits in the Russian Civil War and subsequent battles with the Japanese and Franco’s forces, not only went like lambs to the slaughter, but publicly pled guilty to the outlandish accusations of the NKVD and implicated other Soviet officers. Of course, then, as now, the Western commentariat stood silent in the face of the growing evidence of the ludicrous nature of the show trials.
Russia’s Illegal Immigration Problem Flares Up(0)
Russian authorities set up a detention camp for illegal immigrants, after 4,500 of them were arrested in Moscow during raids on garment factories and markets. The arrested illegals were Vietnamese, Syrians, Egyptians, and Moroccans, along with the usual citizens of former Soviet Central Asian republics. Raids are now taking place in St. Petersburg, where Russian police already arrested hundreds of people.
A brutal attack at Moscow’s Matveyevsky market, which left a policeman hospitalized with a fractured skull outraged Russians and spurred the authorities into action. The attack took place when cops tried to arrest eighteen-year-old Magomed ( the Russified version of “Muhammad”) Magomedov for raping a fifteen-year-old girl. Magomedov, who came to Moscow to help his parents sell counterfeit clothes, confessed on video that he “groped and undressed the still little, underage” girl. When officers attempted to detain Magomedov, his relative Magomed Rasulov, ran up to them and fractured a detective’s skull with a pair of brass knuckles. This outrage, perpetrated in broad daylight in the middle of Moscow, spurred Russian police into action.
The problem of “illegal migrants”, which I have described elsewhere, plagued Russia for about two decades now, since the Soviet Union collapsed and the non-Russian republics rapidly descended into poverty. Current estimates state that there are at least a million of Uzbeks and Tajiks in Moscow and the surrounding region. While citizens of other former Soviet republics like Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan can be deported, Muslim migrants from the lawless autonomous Islamic republics of Dagestan and Chechnya are citizens of the Russian Federation. The two troublemaking Magomeds, for example, are natives of Dagestan, which made it very hard to keep them out of Moscow.
The measures taken by Russian cops, seem to be designed to quiet down the outrage in the Russian media and social networks, and are likely not the sign of a true, sophisticated crackdown on illegal immigration. Unlike in other countries plagued by mass illegal immigration, the Russian public would support strong measures against illegal immigrants. However, the rampant corruption prevalent in Russian government agencies and their dire ineffectiveness stand in the way of any such measures.
College Students for Infanticide(0)
American college students never cease to unpleasantly surprise us (hat tip to Mark Brennan). Dan Jordan of the Media Research Center circulated a petition on George Washington University’s campus, asking students to sign in support of fourth (yes, you read it right, fourth!) trimester abortions.
Jordan explained to the students that “If you don’t know what fourth trimester is, it’s after the baby is already born,” and that women should have a “right to chose” what to do with their “bodies and babies after their pregnancies”. He managed to get 14 students to sign his petition, a number that would’ve been at least double had it been circulated during the regular academic year.
Now, one is tempted to dismiss the students’ support for fourth trimester abortions as evidence of the imbecility and ignorance of American college kids. But that is missing the point. There’s nothing funny about the anti-life stance of today’s young people. Their support for child-killing shows how entrenched the culture of death is in our society. One could imagine these same kids growing up into adults that leave numerous aborted children in their wake. After all, it’s all about a “woman’s right to choose”, isn’t?
It’s very easy to picture these same college kids wheeling out their frail grandparents and parents to a Dr. Kevorkian, so they could get their paws on their inheritance sooner and don’t have to visit Grandpa in the nursing home.
The Lincoln Worshippers Strike Again(0)
The “resignation” of Rand Paul’s aide Jack “Southern Avenger” Hunter was another broadside cannon shot fired in the war between us paleos and the liberals and neocons over Abraham Lincoln, a war that started with the attack on the late M.E. Bradford.
The mainstream howled in outrage over Hunter’s 2004 column “John Wilkes Booth Was Right”. Now, raising a toast to the assassin of an American president, is of course going too far. However, most of the things Jack Hunter wrote in that column are right on and all paleoconservatives would agree with them. Here are just a few examples:
“In fact, not only was Abraham Lincoln the worst President, but one of the worst figures in American history.”
“Despite the Founding Fathers’ intentions Lincoln appointed himself dictator. For the first time in American history – civilian populations became military targets, private property was destroyed intentionally, and millions of Southerners of all ages, races and sexes were starved, raped, beaten and brutalized into submission.”
“Lincoln’s war empowered the federal government beyond the wildest imaginations of any of the Founders and modern Americans can thank Abe Lincoln for laying the groundwork that led to the bloated Federal bureaucracy that taxes us to death today.”
Knowing and recognizing the dark role of Abraham Lincoln in American history is one of the main aspects of the paleoconservative persuasion. Most paleos have at one point or another been subject to the vituperative attacks by the Left and the mainstream “Right” for expressing their views on “Honest Abe”. I, for example, was called an “un-American” proto-Nazi by the despicable Larry Auster for daring to criticize his beloved Lincoln.
The correct response for paleos in the face of such criticism is to stand our ground and respond to the liberals’ and neocons’ hysteric howls with cold, hard historical facts. Surrendering to the commissars of political correctness will only empower them in their drive for our destruction.
Helen Thomas: 92 Years of Dhimmitude(0)
Veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas passed away last week at the age ninety-two. The most noticeable aspect of her media persona was her life-long support for Islamic terrorists. She openly supported the Shiite terror group Hezbollah, even proclaiming to a CNN cameraman: “Thank God for Hezbollah” and said that Israeli Jews “should go back to Poland or Germany” (Imagine the howling outcry if a journalist dared to suggest that Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian Muslims “go back to Arabia”).
What’s ironic in light of her vehemently pro-Muslim views is that Helen Thomas is the descendant of Orthodox Christian immigrants from Lebanon, a community that was oppressed and victimized by Arab Muslims for hundreds of years. One thing is to criticize Israel’s behavior in Lebanon, which is often brutal and unwarranted. Another thing is to genuflect before the likes of Hezbollah and Hamas, whose followers massacred and abused Christians. I wonder if Ms. Thomas was aware of the number of churches desecrated, priests murdered, and Christian women raped by her beloved Palestinians and Shiites.
Unfortunately, many Lebanese Christians adopt not only the political positions of their conquerors, but even their identity. It is well known that Lebanese Christians: Maronite, Melkite, and Orthodox, are not Arabs. Rather, they are the descendants of Phoenician and Syriac natives displaced by the Arab conquerors. Yet, in this country, I’ve met numerous Lebanese and Syrian Christians who insist they’re “Arabs” and parrot the dumbest lines of Arab Muslim propaganda. The fact that this tragic self-denial persists several generations after their families left the Middle East, shows the power of dhimmitude and underlines its tragedy.
When is Barack Going to Get Over Trayvon?(0)
Barack Hussein Obama can’t seem to get over the Trayvon Martin case. First, it was his statement that his son would look (and act ?) like Trayvon. Now, he says that “Trayvon Martin could have been me, 35 years ago”. One wonders what next pearl of wisdom will escape the lips of POTUS: ”I did the same thing Trayvon Martin did 35 years ago, but got away with it”?
Even half-wit presidents like Slick Willie and Dubya had the presence of mind not to interject so obnoxiously into a criminal case which was adjudicated by a jury of their peers. For someone who supposedly went to Harvard Law School, our current president demonstrates a remarkably poor understanding of how American courts work.
Obama would do well to remember the words of his friend Jesse “Hymietown” Jackson before he makes any more idiotic and incendiary comments about the Trayvon Martin case:
There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery. Then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved…
George Zimmerman’s Acquittal: Live Not By Lies(0)
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s famous admonition to “live not by lies” was the first thing that came to mind when the long-suffering George Zimmerman was finally acquitted. However, I am hesitant to engage to in jubilant ululation since justice would’ve truly been served if Zimmerman was not indicted and put on trial.
Zimmerman’s ordeal reminded me of another notorious criminal trial that took place in Russia over a century years ago: the Mendel Beilis blood libel trial. In that case, a Jew from Kiev was accused of butchering a Christian boy and using his blood to make matza, the unleavened bread Jews eat on Passover. Like in the Zimmerman case, there was no evidence of guilt and the trial only took place for the government to appease a mob of violent idiots. Like Zimmerman, Beilis was acquitted regardless of the pressure of the authorities and the braying of the media.
Vasily Shulgin – a self-described anti-semite and hardline monarchist was an early supporter of Beilis’ acquittal. He thanked the “simple Russian people” of the Beilis jury for saving the honor of the Russian court and of Russia itself.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the six brave women of the Zimmerman jury. For they spoke truth to power and saved the honor of America.
Volhynia Massacres: Polish Sorrow, Ukrainian Denial(0)
Yesterday, Poland commemorated the 70th anniversary of the 1943-44 Volhynia and Eastern Galicia massacres perpetrated by Ukrainian nationalists of the OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) and UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) led by Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych. Bands of armed Ukrainians descended upon Polish villages in Galicia and Volhynia and massacred at least 40,000 people, mostly women and children. On July 11, 1943 alone, 100 Polish villages were attacked and the inhabitants murdered in the most brutal fashion: with knives and axes.
The areas through which Bandera’s bands rampaged were previously part of Poland and were seized by Stalin in 1940, only to be lost to the Nazis a year later. With the Nazis’ active encouragement, Ukrainian nationalist detachments, which previously helped the Nazis murder the Jews, swooped down on defenseless Polish villages, inhabited mainly by women, children, and the elderly.
An OUN order from 1944 stated with bloodthirsty vehemence:
Liquidate all Polish traces. Destroy all walls in the Catholic Church and other Polish prayer houses. Destroy orchards and trees in the courtyards so that there will be no trace that someone lived there… Pay attention to the fact that when something remains that is Polish, then the Poles will have pretensions to our land.
Unfortunately, the butchers of the OUN/UPA are considered national heroes in today’s western Ukraine, long infamous for its hatred of Russians, Jews, and Poles. A third of the inhabitants of the city of Lviv (Lemberg) have declared themselves followers of Bandera and monuments to him and other butchers of Poles and Jews sprinkled up all over western Ukraine.
Former Ukrainian president Yushchenko, the darling of the eurocrats and the Western establishment showed his true colors when he awarded Bandera and his fellow genocide perpetrator Shukhevych the country’s highest award – Hero of Ukraine. Like today’s Croatia, where the Ustasha murderers are venerated and glorified, western Ukraine genuflects before the butchers of Volhynia.
Israel: Assad’s Not So Secret Ally(0)
Just yesterday, according to the Russian ITAR-TASS news agency, a court in central Israel sentenced an Israeli Arab to 30 months in prison for joining the anti-Assad rebels in Syria. The defendant crossed over to Syria from Turkey and spent six days training with the Islamist rebels, who asked him to carry out a suicide bombing in either Syria or Israel.
Compare this with the situation in Russia, Assad’s closest ally after Hezbollah. As the hard right, pro-Russian Israeli political commentator Avigdor Eskin pointed out, not a single Russian Muslim who went to fight with the Islamists in Syria (and there were dozens, if not hundreds of them) has been held accountable. The Israeli court’s sentence speaks volumes about where Israel’s sympathies lie, Shimon Peres’ past mumblings of sympathy for the rebels notwithstanding.
In other recent news, the Christian Science Monitor reported that almost 100 Syrians have been treated at Israeli hospitals since the start of the conflict, some of the wounded being delivered across the border by Syrian army ambulances. According to Russian sources, Israeli medics have treated not only civilians, but members of Assad’s armed forces.
Finally, ex-Mossad chief Efraim Halevy called Assad “Israel’s Man in Damascus” in his Foreign Affairs article and explained that Bashar, like his father Hafez, for all their support for Hezbollah and Hamas and anti-Israel rhetoric, allowed Israel to have a stable and quiet border with Syria. Halevy voices the fears of Israel’s military/security establishment about the destabilization of the region that would result from the fall of the Assad regime.
All this shows that Netanyahu’s government seems to be fairly pragmatic in its approach towards the civil war in Syria. If only it would be as pragmatic toward the Iranian nuclear program, instead of goading the United States into armed conflict with the Khamenei regime.
The Ignorant American Public(0)
Kevin DeAnna, the founder of Youth for Western Civilization and former WND columnist had an excellent post on his Facebook page that aptly summarized the American public’s lack of interest in or knowledge of history:
“Random conversations with normal people with incredibly detailed knowledge about the history, culture, and military tactics of Westeros. We’re debating strategy about the fictional Battle of the Trident but I guarantee these same people have never heard of the English Civil War. They know about Bran the Builder but have never heard of Oliver Cromwell. And it’s not really their fault.”
Westeros is the mythical world created by George R.R. Martin in his “Game of Thrones” novels that were largely unnoticed until they were made into a miniseries by HBO.
I noticed this widespread ignorance in the late 1990s while attending grade school in Upstate New York. My classmates, all white middle-class descendants of European immigrants, had no idea of basic historical and geographic concepts. A few of them even claimed to me that the events in “Rocky IV”, where Stallone’s character knocked out the Soviet Ivan Drago, actually took place!
I even remember how a social studies teacher, who recently graduated from college, claimed that the Russian and German languages are from the same linguistic family! What use is No Child Left Behind and the billions spent on it when American schools are graduating clueless teenagers taught by only slightly less clueless teachers.
Last August I was flying back to NYC from Los Cabos and the middle-aged woman at the baggage check counter saw that I was born in Moldova from my passport. She immediately said to me in fluent English: ”Moldova was part of the Soviet Union, right? I always dreamed of visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg!” Her knowledge of geography was better than most American college professors I met.
