Mr. Piatak,
I would love to hear your talk. You should consider bringing it South on Christmas. Christmas arrives at our house despite the attacks from the left, demanding that Christian symbols be banished from the public square, and from the right (corporatism) with its Madison Avenue and Hollywood promoted consumerism.
I go out each year for a fresh limb of a thorn bush, with the thorns garnished with gum drops, reminding us of the root of Jesse, of our Lord's crown of thorns, and of the irony of the new creation: life coming from the dead and the death-giving.
I will go out an collect some long-leaf pine cones and make a "Christmas tree" out of them, garnishing them with ribbons and other old family ornaments. On the sixth of January, I will remove the ornaments and burn the cones, adding to the warmth and ambiance of Epiphany.
About three p.m. each Sunday of Advent, we will say a prayer, read a Bible verse and light an Advent candle.
I engage Louisiana navel oranges, Louisiana satsumas and Louisiana lemons at Christmas: the best citrus in the world. There was always one in my stocking, a hallmark of my father.
We attempt to carry on the tradition of my parents which was to take a basket to the "shutins" of our community. Mother at nearly 96 can no longer take the rides and go on the visits; but she still enjoys supervising the baskets.
I pray that our Lord, whose Advent we celebrate, will bless your talk which I am sure will glorify Him and edify His Church.
Mr. Peters,
Thank you for your kind words, and your prayers.
