Islamists
Two small additions. First, the powers-that-be insisted upon Islamist as a negative term to distinguish real Muslims who want to kill us for the sake of religion from people who pretend to be Muslims without really having firm convictions.
Perhaps we should call them Methodist Muslims or, for AW's sake, ELCA-Muslims. Second, why don't we quit playing around and go back to the good old ways of our ancestors who knew what they were fighting. Ali Mir is a Paynim who worships the demon Mahound.

I don't think Western people or Christians can be entirely sure of what exactly they are fighting.
Muslim could range from sexually decadent and amoral Shi'ia Muslims to strict orthodox Sunni Muslims to westernized Lebanese and Syrian Muslims to tribalistic Muslims of central Asia and North Africa.
And arguably, other Muslims are the biggest enemies of Muslims. Why else would Iraqis side with US against Iran?
Tony Blair once said that there is a whole arc of Islamic religious jihad across the world. It was an embarassment for him when it was clarified that the violence of mountain dwelling Chechnyans in Caucasus has nothing to do with the violence of Palestinians. And this was from a world leader with the power to order wars.
