Mr. Cockburn, I've always considered you an honest liberal. However, the anti-abortion amendment isn't a "rollback of reproductive rights", it is a bill forbidding taxpayer money from being used to subsidize the abortion industry. The Stupak Amendment doesn't do a damn thing towards restricting any abortion and you know that. Also, the Orwellian euphemism "reproductive rights" is one of the most repellent applications of the English language ever constructed.

Glenn Beck will burst the envelope he’s already pushing or be impaled on some disclosure from his fraught psychic past. Sarah Palin will be similarly discredited as a public figure".
What is he talking about? Republican money he is bringing up existed when Philadelphia, etc. still voted Republican! They are all Democrats now. And who cares about Beck? Palin discredited more than she has already been, but it is always to no avail? What she is, is poison for the rats, but then the result is that the dog lives. Give it up Mr Cockburn. All this is way over your head.

We're not as broke as we're going to be. In a dozen years or so, Boomer retirements will be in full swing, and all those retirees will be demanding their SocSec and their Medicare.

Christ help the working people when that happens.

Obama has surpassed his predecessors in the rapidity with which he has broken his promises and dashed his supporters hopes. My sense of the situation is that most people are satisfied with the health care they receive although they may disapprove of the system in general. The fear that they would lose their present health benefits if there were any major change to the system doomed the project. We will muddle through with this 2000 page turkey that shovels more money to the insurance industry. How our lords temporal intend to pay for this is beyond me - the country is broke with no relief in sight. Forty thousand more troops in Afghanistan will only make us broker.
