#6 second sentence should read: I have acquaintences who think the election of Obama is second in importance in American history only to the Emancipation Proclamation.

In the main display window at a local Barnes & Noble yesterday I saw a rack of books on Lincoln right next to a rack of books on BO. I have acquaintences who think the election of Obama is as important in American history as the Emancipation Proclamation. The new Lincoln will probably get away with nearly anything he wishes, if these kind of people have anything to do with it.

You didn't get my point, Mr Roberts. The reason why many people would consider NAFTA to be free trade is because of the propaganda, but the claim that 99.9% would consider it to be 'free trade' is nonsense. Most people know it's a brokered deal that favours the bigwigs. I am not a Libertarian, and I'm not talking about unrealistic ideals. To use the term 'free trade' to describe what is going on is to participate in a lie that is destroying us. That is not trivial. It should be called what it is, and liars should not be allowed to get away with such a grand lie.

I know that many libertarians have set up a Platonic ideal of free trade and anything that falls short they call "managed trade." On a certain level this may be true, but it is also trivial. Ideal trade will never exist, and 99.9% of the population would consider NAFTA to be "free trade."

This insistence on changing the nomenclature reminds me of the Marxists who would argue that the reason "communist" countries were failing was because they were not truly communist.

Mr Peters is right. I'm not directing this post at Raimondo, but why in the world do leading opponents of these monstrosities collectively called 'free trade' use the nomenclature of their enemies? NAFTA, GATT, outsourcing, and labour arbitrage are not free trade. We may as well say that the Soviets 'liberated' Afghanistan in 1979 and we opposed it, or that (reductio ad Hitlerum) the Nazis liberated Poland and we opposed it.

Raimondo: "Labor, a major Obamaite constituency, is already agitating for a higher tariff wall, and this fits right in with Obama’s industrial economic policy, which will pick winners and losers in the marketplace—and protect corporate favorites in the name of “national security” and the “war against recession.”"

Through out the primary and presidential debates, while Obama was sounding anti-trade rhetoric, his aids were assuring the rest of the world that Obama was in fact free trader and that Obama's anti-trade rhetoric was mere "political positioning." Obama himself recently said on Fox News that he thinks the U.S. should not "turn its back" on the rest of the world; i.e. we should support free trade. Like Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, in my estimation, Obama is a free-trading globalist.
