For daily spiritual reading, I use, in addition to the Bible, a book titled "Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence." From what I've learned through it, Lincoln was right when he wrote, "In the very responsible position in which I happen to be placed, being a humble instrument int the hands of our heavenly Father, as I am, and as we all are, to work out his great purposes, I have desired that all my works and acts may be according to his will...but if after endeavoring to do my best in the light which he affords me I find my efforts fail, I must believe that for some purpose unknown to me, He wills it otherwise."

Before the first shots were fired in the U.S. Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln had begun to style himself as an instrument of the Lord.

How ironic! He was never a member of any church. Although he attended Baptyist churches at a tender age in Kentucky, and Presbyterian churches at a later age, his faith remains a mystery. Apparently, he never remembered the gospel passage, "for I too am a man under authority."
