@12 Mariam

That's an old saw so stop playing it. Jerusalem was Christian for at least 300 years prior to the mohammedan invasion. The Church of the Sepulchre remains the site of an annual miracle -- the holy fire. Can the Wailing Wall or the Dome of the Rock make the same claim? I don't think so. The crusades were undertaken to protect Christians in the Holy Land from persecution by the marauding horsemen of Mecca.

Dr. Jonathan Chaves of GWU reminded me that the Tibetans used to be a warlike people who routinely terrorized the Chinese. That's why the Han have occupied their land for over 50 years, and are doing the same thing in Turko-Islamic Sinkiang. A little examination of the Buddhist degrees of hell would teach many westerners -- Richard Gere in particular -- that The Dalai Lama's religion is neither sweetness nor light.

I think a more productive line of thinking viz. Islam is suggested by "Spengler" in this fine Asia Times essay:

"It is in the existential experience of Muslim life rather than in the declared tenets of Islam that the motivation of suicide bombers must be sought."

"Of course the Dalai Lama is only acting like a typical politician, but due to his spiritual stature, we expect something better from him. We expect the truth."

A Christian knows, however, that there is only One Truth, and that a man who denies this Truth damns himself to a vicious spiral of either lies or insanity, or both.

"In my college days, I found that those who profess to follow the Dalai Lama are often the same people who most despise the West."

Naturally.

Being ever the cynical observer, I strongly suspect that The Dalai Lama derives no insubstantial income and royalties from his adherents on the left; he has practically renounced any claim to the throne he has no chance whatsoever of regaining from Red China.

So why not belly up to the Muslims to ensure his stature and fortunes... and perhaps, even his safety (where he takes refuge in India, a nation with a large minority of Muslims) ?

That is the trouble with Buddhism. On the surface, it teaches that we should pursue 'Right Living', but there really is no one to hold the pious Bodhisattva to an account, save only the Creator, whose Name is Jesus.

Therefore, the Lama may seek peace in his final days, and indeed he may find refuge from the Sword of Mohammed - but his final judge is also He who said "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." (Matthew 10:28, KJV)
