Since we're on the subject, can anyone recommend an apple variety that would be a good one for most all uses, from fresh eating to canning, cooking, sauce and cider? There are so many varieties out there that it's hard to decide on just one or two.

I live in the South Georgia backwoods. I'm always surprised at how few people around me plant gardens anymore, or have personal livestock. This is something I expect to see soon change. It won't be a turn to something new, just a return to the more sensible and independent. If it were to last a spell we'd probably see the return of the family farm, supplying for the local market. I'm enthusiastic about the idea!

The gummint can have my home grown tomatoes, as soon as they tear them from my cold, dead hands.

A gooey image, but ya know what I mean.

Too right! I once heard an economist from a major American bank advocating outsourcing agriculture as a low value business! This was five years ago, but I lacked the seniority at the time to tell the idiot publically where to go. Food cannot be digitized, or outsourced, and Jefferson would rightly roll in his grave. Everyone should shop locally, grow in their garden, and be prepared for more tough times. Globalization has its benefits, but all in all I am less than impressed. The price of oil and the rise in food prices will reverse some of the negative effects, revive rural communities in Europe and America. Further, Chindia may have the steel and the call centers, but we have the food. What's more important?

Not to toot my own horn, but in the past year I have planted a vegetable garden; herb garden (basil, rosemary, etc.); fruit trees (apple, cherry, plum, peach and pear); grape vines (wine making, of course); strawberry patch; and blueberry, blackberry and raspberry bushes. Gardening is a relaxing and rewarding way to spend hours in the evening or on the weekend.

The bad news - I've spent about as much on food so far this year as in the same time period last year and have lost 30 pounds. The good news - I needed to lose 30 pounds and need to lose a lot more. A good idea for eaters to grow their own food, better still for them to eat less. I'm looking forward to visiting my local farmers' market tomorrow.

I am told it is not unreasonable to always also have an easy 6 months supply of canned goods on hand. As they approach their expiration date or plenty before you eat em and replenish.

Anyway never mind that, it may scare folks (it's something that's just prudent) unless we do plant our own gardens and can hunt.

Lastly a local restaurant owner where I live made some minor adjustments to his vehicle's internal combustion engine and it now runs like a charm (same everything as when running on gas) only now it runs on his restaurant's used french fry oil. Instead of chucking it, throwing it out he puts now in his car [it's free] a kind of recycling. Don't take my word for it it was on the news on t.v.

I wonder if he'll be targeted for assassination, a national security risk? What a joke the cartel known as the u.s. has become. Let my people go.
