American Liberty Teetering on Edge of Abyss

Paul Craig Roberts"Your papers please" has long been a phrase associated with Hitler's Gestapo. People without the Third Reich's stamp of approval were hauled off to Nazi Germany's version of Halliburton detention centers.

Today, Americans are on the verge of being asked for their papers, although probably without the "please."

Thanks to a government that has turned its back on the U.S. Constitution, Americans now have an unaccountable Department of Homeland Security that is already asserting tyrannical powers over U.S. citizens and state governments. Headed by the neocon fanatic Michael Chertoff, the Orwellian-sounding Department of Homeland Security has mandated a national identity card for Americans, without which Americans may not enter airports or courthouses.

There is no more need for this card than there is for a Department of Homeland Security. Neither is compatible with a free society.

However, Bush, the neocons, Republicans and Democrats do not want America to any longer be a free society, and they are taking freedom away from us just as they took away the independence of the media.

Free and informed people get in the way of power-mad zealots with agendas.

It is the agendas that are supreme, not the American people, who have less and less say about less and less.

George W. Bush, an elected president, has behaved like a dictator since Sept. 11, 2001. If "our" representatives in Congress care, they haven't done anything about it. Bush has pretty much cut Congress out of the action.

In truth, Congress gave up its lawmaking powers to the executive branch during the New Deal. For three-quarters of a century, the bills passed by Congress have been authorizations for executive branch agencies to make laws in the form of regulations. The executive branch has come to the realization that it doesn't really need Congress. President Bush appends his own "signing statements" to the authorizations from Congress in which the president says what the legislation means. So what is the point of Congress?

As for laws already on the books, the U.S. Department of Justice (sic) has ruled that the president doesn't have to abide by U.S. statutes, such as FISA or the law forbidding torture. Neither does the president have to abide by the Geneva Conventions.

Other obstacles are removed by edicts known as presidential directives or executive orders. There are more and more of these edicts, and they accumulate more and more power and less and less accountability in the executive.

The disdain in which the executive branch holds the "separate and equal" legislative branch is everywhere apparent. For example, President Bush is concluding a long-term security agreement with the puppet government he has set up in Iraq. Prior to Sept. 11, 2001, when the president became The Decider, a defense pact was a treaty requiring the approval of Congress.

All that is now behind us. Gen. Douglas Lute, President Bush's national security adviser for Iraq, says that the White House will not be submitting the deal to Congress for approval. Lute says Bush will not be seeking any "formal inputs from the Congress."

"There is no question that this is unprecedented," said Yale Law School Professor O. Hathaway.

Bush can do whatever he wants, because Congress has taken its only remaining power—impeachment—off the table.

The Democratic Party leadership thinks that the only problem is Bush, who will be gone in one year. Besides, the Israel lobby doesn't want Israel's champion impeached, and neither do the corporate owners of the U.S. media.

The Democrats are not averse to inheriting the powers in Bush's precedents. The Democrats, of course, will use the elevated powers for good rather than for evil.

Instead of having a bad dictator, we'll have a good one.

It's about preserving the State-Capitalistic status quo with the class now at its helm. The social security number is used by the banks because the taxpayers (the federal tax pool) underwrites, leverages and insures everything they do. The system itself since money can also be printed without any backing for it such as gold or silver etc. is designed to transfer essentially it ALL to the few at the levers. This current oligarchy as 'decided' that's worth defending at both the Contstitution's and the American people's demise.

    IMPEACH now!

No wonder Shakespeare too has been booted out of Literature classes at the 'college/s'... Making a famine where abundance lies,

  2. Wow PCR! That rant brings new meaning to "LUNATIC".

  3. Matt, it seems you didn't read past the first paragraph, which was strong indeed.

Not sure what is loony about the rest.

PCR's style of writing is a refreshing addition to the more circumspect style of most Chronicles writers.

  4. Wake up and smell the coffee!.........This ain't no science fiction movie!

  5. @2

That's right, Matt. Only a lunatic would fear unbridled power in the hands of a president. Why, we all know the current crop of candidates for the job would never abuse that power.

  6. Why is Chronicles getting all these neocon trolls like Matt and jmcnulty these days? I doubt any Chronicles regulars are going to the FrontPageMag message board.

  7. the media sets the agenda. mcCain is slated on the republican side to replace bush as the new israeli 'champion.' mcCain is just as stupid as w. bush. possibly more so. what good is straight talk from a moron. what good is the 'stupid talk Express'? he's the media's darling for the 'reason' i've mentioned as the new 'champion'. oh and by the way they love to (in the media), it's part of their strategy to make the moron out an 'underdog'. americans like underdogs. so do israelis long as they stay 'under' their THUMB. when i say 'israelis' - of course it's the zionists which are the equivalent of our neocons and the ruling class these days for the most part which has been corrupted and coopted. same in israel. & the average joe israeli is as stupid as the average american. the mean i.q. in tel aviv is 98.

  8. The Illusion of Choice: which do you prefer of the Cleared candidates!?

  9. This quote:

"..................................and neither do the corporate owners of the U.S. media"

..............is the biggest problem the US faces now. A few companies own the networks and newspaper syndicates that form opinion and tell the publicn what is verbotten to think and what is correct to hold true. The power of the media is so centralized now through all of this. Independent regional commentary is all dissapearing. We hear the elite's "concerns" constantly, but what of ordinary people---the real country's, wishes.

This election cycle has been utterly dispiriting for me. I cannot believe I'll be faced with the choice I'll be faced with in November. It certainly isn't the nation that Reagan left us anymore.

  10. miles thanks for your post right above.

it's all by DESIGN. gradual so the frog in the water that's being heated slowly gets used to it until well - he's on the plate - 'frogs' legs' ... and NEVER jumped out of the pot.

let's go the video-tape - but first a maxim - 'absolute (or perfect in that sense) balance in the world is not possible, however Approximate balance is requisite.' ... that's because the world is living. and so since it's by design dynamic where 'perfect' is concerned - we can only say obviously - 'imperfect's perfect.'

this does NOT mean right & wrong are not Absolute or the difference always perfectly there. though in-the world can also be the shades of grey. I'll give you an example - the powers that be set up a medicaid program that is so easy to rip-off that literally $60-BILLION goes out the door from the federal taxpool to fraud Every year. however THAT is part & parcel of the State-Capitalistic SYSTEM by its design. (it's not incompetent in that regard it's intentional.) get it?

ok you-yourself miles don't 'steal' - you appreciate knowing the difference between right & wrong, as well as knowing its relative value of making a civilization even possible. HOWEVER it's precisely BASED on the System as it has been set up by those of less sterling character than yourself, that those of less sterling character than yourself Can - each and every year by setting up their fake medical supply companies and by easily processing their paper they can and do take or rip out of the taxpool in very large multi-million dollar chunks $60-BILLION annually - out the door, and into their pockets.

miles (of more sterling character) what happens to you and yours? When the dross - those who do this as a knee-jerk reaction not caring one iota about right & wrong and its inherent absolute nature or its value in making civilization even possibe - get all of that money, again based on the State-Capitalistic System itself - and subsequently they too get all of that Power that goes along with their wealth as a result...And that inevitably quashes and kills you & yours. IF that's the system then without it changing the absolute nature of right and wrong...And indeed due to the absolute nature of right and wrong shouldn't you and yours also have been getting by Hook or by crook YOUR share of the $60-BILLION? Simply doing so as an act of inevitable self-defense?! And to maintain some kind of Requisite approximate balance in the world?

You see it's BOTH - precisely because right & wrong are Abolutes they also ARE relative as well.

Perhaps you were only stupid or a coward and so that's why you didn't get your share each year? Or perhaps you were blind - and to the pure all things are pure? But those who set this System up this State-Capitalistic system did so precisely to be able to take advantage of it in this way - and medicaid is just one (believe it or not) smaller example.

So knowing this now - and given that you and yours are in danger due to those of less sterling character and motivation who are accumulating all of that wealth and POWER - And miles - still accepting the absolute nature of right and wrong and precisely Because of its absolute nature - what is therefore the Right thing for YOU to do?

If you told me - I'd better set up my fake medical supply biz and get mine since that's the system - I'd say why not - that's certainly one Right answer of many and no less so than any others. And I'd say so since it's case by case - and you are one of the purer ones who is inevitably sometimes fatally so - Victimized by this.

But all of this might have been avoided prior to Reagan - if Carter had simply in behalf of the necessary BALANCE allowed Ralph Nader to start his publically funded Federal AGENCY - like all of the other publicaly funded Federal Agencies except this one actually in behalf of the American citizen -The Citizens Action Agency- with and funded by our OWN tax dollars we PAY into the system Every year. Instead of ONLY allowing our tax dollars to underwrite, leverage & insure the big corporations and banks who also OWN all of the existing Federal agencies we taxpayers PAY for and which are only Fronts for those large corporations they PRETEND to 'regulate'. Then WITH our own MONEY our own tax dollars via our Citizens Action Agency - we could be suing the large corporations and banks etc. every single time they've stepped wantonly and illegally on all of our toes. *That's what approximate balance is all about...But instead, since Carter it's all ony been a one-way street in the other direction, using the people's money to screw the people- and miles your old 'buddy' Reagan just helped it along, he even rushed it down that one way street. Do you understand...

Where Carter didn't have the guts to back what would have moved us as a nation toward some approximate balance; on the other hand Reagan was either too stupid to realize it was necessary or simply too committed to an Undoable ideology which prevented him from it. In other words - a Republican.

AND you are correct about the brainwashing of the media - the media today is also a front and a cover for big business which is big government (one and the same)... and the third leg of the TRIPOD is even MORE secure and in place than ever - big Media which today is so powerful as to literally SET the nation's agenda.

Watch - if Ralph Nader wants to run again this year... the media will let you know he's just a crank and an anathema...

While in the meantime -or meanwhile back at the ranch- you are all held upsidedown by your ankles and the quarters shaken out of your pockets until... just to keep this HOLLOW economy floating - which has been so emptied and ripped off - the powers that be want to try to give you back $600 bucks to see if that might help jump start it? Who do you think HAS the bounty and the abundance that your nation once was?

You think Ralph Nader has it?

  11. i like the posts above - however you have not yet IMPEACHED bush - sometimes it must be said twice...

‘Pity the world, or esle this glutton be:
To eat the world’s due, by the grave and thee.’ -W.S.

if you do not - do NOT blame me...

i'd do him myself with my bare hands... that's 'who' he is. it would be his gift. he's a real terrorist... in behalf of the owners.

the ones who 'know' the unknowable. (humor) they still have time. they weren't the 'doers' per se... the "deciders" - they know that.

get it? otherwise now i'm going after the whole she-Bang of the bogus - congress... has been so for a Loooooong time now.

they're, by the way also 'doers'. even the broads. or especially them? since soooo sweet, looking. it's gotten this bad now...

since we tried to warn you all for your and our own good 8 years or so ago... time is a factor in time-space... it's running Out. no?

  12. I hear George Bush has cut a deal with the space aliens to hand over the Western Hemisphere except for Texas, where GWB will remain dictator for life. The invasion will occur the day after the November election. I'm surprised that Roberts hasn't been all over this story, he's usually right on top of similar stories.

  13. The "Freedom of Information Act" changed things! Without it, Historical Revisionism was considered "Conspiracy Nuts" and viewed as "Unpatriotic".......................But, because of this Act, we now have "Factual Information"(For those that like FACTS) continue to flow in indefinatly. As a result, Lincoln, FDR, LBJ, JFK, The Bay of Pigs, Gulf of Tonkin Incident, Pearl Harbor, and a multitude of incorrect historical events are back out into the light for examination.

In real time, the internet has made real time events more available to the citizen, allowing them to question things like "Why were 5 U.S. Presidential Candidates on the same stage in Israel in Jan 2007 just prior to launching the debates?(7th Herzliya Conference) Gingrich(Backed out), Romney, Edwards, Guiliani, McCain.................Israeli's can't vote in our elections, BUT THEY CAN DONATE!!

We have become the "United States Incorporated", accepting stockholders from anywhere! And telling the middleclass to "Shut up you bigots, and go to work!".........And NOW George Will tells us to "Suck it up!" at CPAC!................The GOP(GUTTED OUR PRINCIPLES) is history.......Americans will no longer stand in the front yard waving a flag as their home get's repposesed!

  14. More than any nationally read columnist, Paul Craig Roberts is the oracle who's slowly waking up America's somnolent citizens. Roberts does his research, he writes compellingly, and he's most always right. (Read his 2007 columns at LewRockwell.com's archives.) But where are the bold editors and investigative journalists, who should be following Robert's leads? Not in the establishment press. Those folks are all tremblechins fearful of government power or the media owners. And what about the national columnists? Mostly lemmings there as well. So huzzah for Paul Craig Roberts and hats off to Chronicles and the other sites that carry his columns.

  15. "Robert" of a few posts above is just one of those aliens? But that's the tactic...pretend what's happening. When more than less accurately depicted for a change is instead crazy...Like a ralph nader is supposed to be according to the media.

But here's where Robert may inadvertently be correct - just IF the strange and bizarre Mr. G.W. Bush otherwise known as el'Presidente is privvy to knowing and finding out as el Presidente, that much more powerful aliens currently are here and rule (no choice) as they are an order of magnitude beyond us... - and IF Robert is one of them? That's how they'd treat alerting the public to it as well... they'd PRETEND that - to think that's the case (especially if it is) is nuts.

ROBERT'S one way or another age old SCUM. Which is the much more likely scenario. And he probalby knows it now. ?

  16. Most Americans are too lazy to do the research on anything, before comming to a final decision. One example: Just knowing that not only has the Bin Laden family and the Bush family had a LONG and successful business relationship for years, but UBL's brother(Salem Bin Laden) actually died in a plane crash at the Crawford Texas Ranch!......But, Americans are so damn naive that they think, "What has that got to do with anything?"

What if it was WWII and Hitler's family had a long working relationship with FDR and Adolph Hitler's brother was killed in an airplane crash at the FDR "Party Central" in "Hot Springs"?
