Last Hurrah for Reagan Coalition?
The huge Democratic turnout in the Iowa Caucuses, over twice that of the GOP, and the stampede by independents to vote in the Democratic precincts, suggests that Iowa, a swing state carried by President Bush in 2004, may be lost irretrievably to the GOP in 2008.
Why is Iowa walking away from the GOP? Why did Barack Obama win almost as many votes as all the Republicans put together?
First, Iraq. Parties that march nations into what the people come to see as unnecessary or unwinnable wars face the inevitable consequences.
Truman found that out when he was trounced by Estes Kefauver in New Hampshire in 1952. Lyndon Johnson found that out when Sen. Gene McCarthy captured 42 percent of the vote in New Hampshire in 1968 and was about to humiliate LBJ in Wisconsin. LBJ stood down, before the country threw him down. Richard Nixon took the helm.
The GOP lost Iowa because of its persistent failure to recognize and its refusal to address the anxiety and insecurity of the middle class.
George H.W. Bush's failing in 1992 is the failing of son George W. Bush. With the sole exception of Mike Huckabee, the GOP seems unable to comprehend how throwing U.S. workers into Darwinian competition with foreigners earning one-fifth or one-tenth their wages impacts the Reagan Democrats now deserting the GOP. A party that used to admonish one and all, "There is no free lunch," cannot see that free trade is no free lunch.
Moreover, the party is mired in the past, looking back to the time of Reagan. Reagan was a good man and a great president, but our time is no more his time than the Eisenhower 1950s were like the 1920s.
While the GOP is in grave trouble, defeat in 2008 is not foreordained. The Democrats are winning not because of the superiority of their candidates or ideas but because the Republicans are perceived as failing. Neither Hillary Clinton nor Barack Obama has the answer to what ails America. Both, and Barack especially, have moved far outside the mainstream of the nation.
"I am the change agent," each of the Democrats proclaims. But when this country is facing an entitlements crisis with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid—unfunded liabilities adding up to scores of trillions of dollars—is it not madness to promise 50 million people, half of them immigrants, legal and illegal, national health insurance?
Who is going to pay for this when the states are heading back toward bankruptcy, the economy is slowly sinking, U.S. companies are being taxed up to 40 percent and the most successful Americans are already paying half their income to local, state and federal governments?
Does anyone think Democrats have an answer to the immigration crisis that now grips every great American city? The amnesty, the "path to citizenship" they favor, will mean the next invasion will be the last and decisive invasion that makes America unrecognizable.
Does anyone think the Party of Government that depends on government workers and unions at election time can make government more efficient? Does anyone think that a party that depends on teachers unions and the NEA can reform the social Katrina that is inner-city education in America? Was it not Democrats who ran the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana in the time of Katrina? But the American people want change, and Democrats represent change.
On issue after issue, the Republican Party, if it stood true to its beliefs and purged the twin heresies of neoconservatism in foreign policy and Wall Street Journal ideology in trade and immigration policy, would still stand well with Middle America.
Most Americans are traditionalist on right to life, homosexual marriage, a polluted culture and Hollywood values. Most Americans believe in a defense second to none, while staying out of wars that are not our quarrels.
Conservatives never believed in the United States going into nation-building abroad because they never believed in government nation-building at home. Nations grow organically. They rise from the soil of their own history, culture, faith, traditions.
Republicans believe in conservative judges and strict-constructionists justices like Antonin Scalia, who do not write the laws, but interpret the laws we have written through our elected representatives.
Democrats know this. Thus, they are not promising us any new Ruth Bader Ginsburgs.
What has alienated America is the Bush bellicosity, the my-way-or-the-highway free-trade ideology, the refusal to defend the border with the implication that anyone who wants to preserve the country he grew up in is some kind of bigot. The Party of Reagan is losing the country because it is no longer the party of the principles, policies and persona of Reagan, as applied to the problems of our time.

Leon, you are absolutely correct.
Sean didn't bother to note what I had written and put it in context - "nature dictates that all peoples must look for their own interests". For whatever reason he just knee jerk attacked with an intended smear.
Anyway, I have been alive long enough to see first hand that as society changes, political ideas that were considered at the "fringe" gain traction and inevitably become mainstream as time goes on and the consequences of past policy bear their fruit. In this regard, time is on our side.
The fact that every ethnic group in this country has legitimate advocacy except white Europeans will change, as we become a minority in our own homeland.
If you fellows are waiting for RHOWA to take place, please do so at Stormfront or someplace else. Once of the nice things about Chronicles and TRI it doesn't try to replicate the racial identity politics practiced by messrs Farrakhan or Rev. Sharpton, or Rev. Jackson or the woman who wrote the University of Delaware's manuel on diversity. Not being ashamed of one's heritage and history is one thing. Being obsessed about race is something completly different. And I'm sorry I don't I get up every morning and think about racial holy war. Yes different groups look out for their own interests, but not at someone else's expense.
Excuse me Sean, but advocating preservation of the country you were born in - is not radicalism, fascism, or any other 'ism.
The population of this country is going broke from voting with their feet - fleeing diversity that is being shoved down our throats. And the new diversity comes at OUR expense by the way.
It is now out of the bag that the 'North American Union' is a coming reality after all (Ron Paul has pledged to fight against it...so there's no good denying that it is being planned).
A new poll in Britain has shown that some 40% of all Britons foresee leaving their own country and ancestral home in their lifetimes - and 4,000 per week are doing just that today - because of third world immigration.
So you can stand comfortably on your moral high ground and despise and stigmatize those that are not comfortable with the new world order, but I believe the long tide of history and unforeseen consequence will sweep you from that hill top.
It's going to be an interesting century.

Are you saying that it is wrong to oppose the continuation of post-1965 immigration on the basis of racial/demographic considerations?
Do you believe that millions of Chinese living in China are interchangeable with millions of White Americans living in America?
Do you prefer an America that was 90 percent White to one that could one day be 30 percent White?
May we call you Saint Scallon patron Saint of America, the idea nation.
Asians in America do look out for their racial interests and it is done at the expense of the legitmate racial interests of themajority Euro-American Christian population.
You are free to believe in your little fairy tale about America Sean. The most fundmental issue in America today is the competition for America's scarce resources among different racial groups. Winners and losers are being created every day. The majority of the losers are Euro-Christian Americans.
I'll take it a step further, either Eruo-Americans organize politically around their legitmate racial interests or they will face complete racial and economic dispossession in America. If they organize around their legitmate racial interests, there will be very strong response from Hispanics,Asians,Muslims and Africans.
There already is a low-grade-maybe not all that low grade- racial warfare going on in the US. And it is being waged by Asians,Muslims,Africans and Hispanics against the majority Euro-Amertican population. Kind obvious. But you can go ahead and pretend it isn't gong on Sean.
As we get closer to November 4, 2008 expect more front stories in the NYT about wealthy Asian "Americans" flexing their political muscles and issuing threats to White America like Asian "Americans" did four yearsago.
Who said anything about opposing immigration, post 1965 or any other year? There are many reasons to oppose even legal immigration from environmental to financial to cultural.
I don't even know how this tangent got started. All I was talking about was how old the GOP's electoral base is and pretty soon I'm hearing talk about the coming race war and about how Chinese are going to kill us all.
Go talk amongst yourseves. I do not wish to be a part of this discussion.
Um Sean, you are the one who is talking race war...we are talking about the need to politically organize to look after our peoples' interests - such as maintaining our demographic balance so as not to be dispossessed of our own countries? So as not to be forced to finance that same dispossession?
Leon only said that race war was the one thing that isn't going to happen.
What we are talking about here - politically organizing to preserving the West, is what Pat has written books about you know?
How typical of the cultural left! To put words in our mouthes, and then stand by and essentially say "See! You are all racists! We told everyone all along!"
That is precisely the type of thing that won't hold water much longer.
Either Native Born White Americans politicaly organize around their legitmate interests or the they will face complete racial and economic dispossession at the hands of Hispanics,Muslims,Africans and Asians who are politically organized around their racial/national interests.
The race war has already started. Resources will contnue to become scarce
Here's our latest radio show re: McCain's record. He's now said he doesn't care if we're in Iraq for 50 or 100 years!

The last word I will post on this now long string is this:
The frustration many of us have is simply that we (as white European Americans) are allowed no legitimate identity or interests - period.
Asian Americans have Asian interests groups - reported in the media, and not condemned by our government or media.
God knows there are African/Black organizations that are accepted as legitimate, and taken very seriously.
The same goes for Women, Gays, American Indians, Islamics, Hispanics, Jews, Pacific Islanders, atheists - you name it.
Our political representatives will go to address each and every one of the aforementioned groups to make news copy.
But when have you ever heard of white Americans (the people who made and defined this country, from the first colonists to 1965, and to date still are the majority in most states) mentioned in terms of "white Americans" - as anything other than derogative or terms of guilt?
In a country supposedly built (lately) on equality - we are the unwanted stepchildren that can only be mentioned as sacrificing for for the good of others (a positive) or in shame - if we are mentioned at all.
The fact is - no politician will address the concerns of white Americans at all - on those terms. They may address Christians, or taxpayers - but not as white Americans.
Officially - we, as white Americans, are too veil to acknowledge that we even exist as another people or group...it can only be done on the periphery - in assumed code words (Christians, etc).
Now that the tide of demography is against us - that will end as times change...no matter what our elites wish, because the dirty secret is - we, just like everyone else on earth - exist.
Ok, off my soap box.
