Booklog Restored
I had put the Booklog on hold, as we waited for the new design of Chroniclesmagazine.org and for the creation of a new website, www.triacademy.org, which will house our educational activities. The column will now appear in both places.
There will be some changes. Instead of posting an endless series of new entries, I am going to make additions to the original until it grows too long and requires another posting. Each new entry will appear at the top of the main page and gradually work its way down. I am also going to aim at greater variety and work at a faster pace. We know from looking at the traffic that the Booklog gets as much traffic as news stories, and yet we receive few comments. I think this reticence may reflect a certain reluctance to make public comments on subjects lying outside a reader's general knowledge. Be not afraid. We all make fools of ourselves everyday. If you have no observations to contribute, questions, which often stimulate discussion, are always welcome.
I am going to start off with a few remarks about the plays of John Dryden, specifically All for Love and Marriage à la Mode, comparing them with Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra and with one or two comedies. The point of this exercise will be to gain a better understanding of classicism and neoclassicism in modern literature, why it is indispensable and how it often fails. Soon after (perhaps even before finishing Dryden), I am going to take up a book from last year, Nicholas Wade's Before the Dawn: Recovering the Lost History of Our Ancestors. This book, which purports to investigate human history from the apes to the dawn of early civilization, has won the praise of E.O. Wilson and Lionel Tiger. I have skimmed much of it, and, despite some serious gaps, both in method and in information, Wade has done a good job. After that, or perhaps as we begin to close that discussion, we turn to Gregory the Great's Magna Moralia, a much neglected masterpiece of moral thought and Scriptural exegesis. I'll be posting links to buy Dryden and Wade and a link to an internet site for St. Gregory. I welcome other suggestions. Jane Austen? Hume's History? Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes? Livy and Terence? A new novel by my friend Tito Perdue?

Why did Byron and Scott, the two most popular Romantic writers in Britain, regard John Dryden as one of the great masters? Scott, in fact, put out an edition of his works. T.S. Eliot, in a famous essay, held up Dryden (against the Romantics) as the model, while C.S. Lewis, who out of instinct disagreed with virtually every critical position taken by Eiot, took up the cudgels for Shelley against Dryden. Other major poets come in and out of fashion--witness the fortunes of Donne, Marvell, Pope, and Tennyson. But Dryden alone has fallen from a height on which he stood with Shakespeare and Milton down to the subterannean depths where roam the spirits of poets who are only read in school.
To anticipate the argument I am going to make, Dryden is the poet and dramatist most needed by this age. Of course, we all know that Dryden is a serious commentator on politics and religion, the finest imitator of the classics in our language, a critic of superior judgment and learning, but it is for another quality that I wish to introduce him to friends and readers: He attained the true classic sense of form and balance without entirely losing his native English boldness of language and imagination. He is, in other words, the link between Shakespeare and Pope.
Before going on too long in general terms, let us begin with the concrete, his tragedy All for Love or the World Well Lost, a play (as he says) in the style of Shakespeare. Specifically, the Shakespeare he had in mind was Antony and Cleopatra, whose last act gave him the subject of his play. It is sometimes said that Dryden was trying to outdo Shakespeare by showing up his crudity. This is a mistake. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Dryden thought Shakespeare to be the greatest English dramatist and preferred him to Ben Jonson, the literary and critical master of the first half of the 17th century. It was Dryden, in a very real sense, who made Shakespeare’s reputation. As a critic, however, Dryden could see Shakespeare's shortcoming—lack of coherent motivation, lack of emotional control within scenes that swing back and forth from one mood to another, lack of symmetry and balance among characters. On the other hand, he did not side with noble Restoration wits, recently returned from exile in France, who would allow nothing to be excellent that deviated from the rules and practice of Corneille and Racine.
So, read the play and, if you do not remember it, read Antony and Cleopatra. On Monday I'll have a few reflections on neoclassicism in general and then we'll do a quick comparison of the two and see what lessons can be drawn.
Part II: Dryden's All for Love
It should not be necessary to retell the story of All for Love. The action takes place some time after the naval Battle of Actium (September, 31 BC) in which Antonius was decisively defeated by Gaius Caesar Octavianus, or rather, by Octavian’s friend and commander, Marcus Agrippa. The seasick future emperor lay sick in his bunk, or so it is said. The day might have been saved, but at a critical moment Cleopatra sailed away, apparently leaving Antony in the lurch. Panic ensued, and the day—and the empire Antony and Cleopatra were building—was lost. Some historians have justified Cleopatra’s move as prudence—her ship was carrying the treasury and she and Antony had agreed it should be protected at all cost. Apparently, if this version is correct, their great mistake lay in not telling anyone of their plan. Both Shakespeare and Dryden, however, attribute her desertion to female cowardice.
In All for Love, Dryden simplifies and clarifies both the plot and the cast of characters: There are, for example, roughly 12 entries in the listing of Dryden’s cast as opposed to Shakespeare’s 40+. While Shakespeare, borrowing directly from Plutarch, presents an historical pageant with cuts back and forth between Antony and Octavian and tells the whole tale of the Triumvirate, marriage pact, quarrel, Actium, and the double suicide, Dryden confines himself to one theme and one scene: Alexandria after the defeat at Actium.
Unlike Shakespeare, who offers a kaleidoscope of shifting characters and emotions, Dryden restricts each scene to one emotional development, and balances his characters, one against the other. In Act I, for example, shame and despair over defeat give way to courage and resolution as Antony listens to Ventidius who plays the part of his Roman conscience. In Act II, which balances the first, Antony’s resolution to go to the troops is supplanted by his love for Cleopatra, who would rather have him die with her than take his chances. In Act III, the blissful reign of love is overthrown by family loyalty, as Octavia shows Antony their children and promises to leave him alone, if only he will make peace with her brother on honorable terms.
With fewer characters and a much more restricted setting and simpler plot, Dryden can paint his characters with bolder strokes. In All for Love the main characters, compared with their Shakespearean counterparts, are elevated and simplified. Cleopatra is now a majestic queen, no longer a plotting strumpet. When Shakespeare’s Cleopatra pretends she never loved Caesar, her servants mock her, but we believe Dryden’s heroine when she says she was a slave who feared rape and not really a willing mistress.
Shakespeare had stuck more closely to history and made Antony a drunken rake, whose vices were balanced by his courage and audacity. We do not feel that Octavian is being priggish when he object’s to Antony’s rioting and inattention to business. Dryden’s Antony, by contrast, is a noble general with only one real weakness, his love for Cleopatra. Since Dryden does not feel free to make major innovations in the plot, he purifies his hero and heroine by forcing minor characters to assume some of their vices. It is Alexas the eunuch, who now contrives the plot ascribed to Cleopatra by Shakespeare. On the other hand, Ventidius, a fairly minor character in Antony and Cleopatra, becomes the Roman voice of duty and acts as Antony’s conscience. Antony’s respect for Ventidius lets the audience see that Antony, despite the weakness inspired by love, is really a noble Roman.
Antony and Octavian are well-drawn opposites. Neither lacks virtues, but while Antony is all courage and impetuosity, Octavian is cold caution. Antony does not lack prudence nor Octavian courage, but Antony despises a man who “would live like a lamp to the last wink/ and crawl upon the utmost verge of life./ O Hercules, Why should a man like this/ Who dares not trust his fate for one great action/ Be all the care of heaven?”
Octavia, Octavian's sister and Antony's wife, has a bigger role in Dryden's play. For both playwrights, she is a loyal wife who tries to patch things up between the two men she loves, but in Dryden, some of the plot turns on the terms she brings to Antony, demanding nothing for herself, not even her rights as wife. She is also used to set off Cleopatra's character. In one of the finest scenes of the play, Octavia denounces Cleopatra to Antony, and, with sad patience, he tries to dissuade her. His continued infatuation finally infuriates the injured wife. If a man can throw away a beautiful and loyal wife, the mother of his children, along with his career and very life, then the woman for whom he makes that sacrifice must be more than beautiful. Dryden has perhaps taken a hint from Homer, who instead of describing Helen, makes the whole war a testimonial to her beauty.
Octavia’s nobility is historically accurate, so far as the sources can inform us. But Dryden cannot let her nobility triumph over Cleopatra. A scene for which Dryden feared censure from Frenchified critics is the witch contest between Antony’s two women, but he could not resist. Each is herself, each rises to the occasion, though Octavia, with her sneering at erotic passion, gives just a hint as to why a man might leave her.
Part III Neoclassical Drama, Comedy
Long before Dryden England had produced great dramatists— Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, Beaumont and Fletcher—who had followed in the footsteps of Italian, Spanish, and French playwrights. The Renaissance theater already in the 16th century was neo-classical. This is most obvious in the choice of classical themes, mythology, and even in the fondness for revenge plots, which were borrowed from Seneca, though they ultimately go back to the story of Orestes, a favorite subject of Greek dramatists.
Less obvious is the mere fact of telling coherent stories by means of actors, an art more or less invented by the Greeks. Gilbert Highet, in The Classical Tradition, sums up what Renaissance dramatists learned from the ancients: “The conception of drama as a fine art…the realization of drama as a type of literature…theatre-building and the principles of dramatic production…” and, finally and perhaps most importantly, “the structure of modern drama.” By structure he means such things a drama divided into acts, taking 2-3 hours to perform, the use of iambic verse for narrative, the three unities of place, time, and subject. The three unities have often been ridiculed, but unity of theme was dictated by Aristotle and unity of time (roughly a day) was drawn from his description of Athenian drama, and unity of place could certainly be deduced as a tendency, though it is violated in the Eumenides. Of course any rule can be imposed arbitrarily, but anyone who has sat through one of Shakespeare’s Histories must be irritated and confused by the constant scene-changes.
The Restoration would see a second and perhaps final flowering of the English theater. Setting aside the indecencies of Wycherly, Farquar, Ethredge, and even Congreve or the histrionics of Otway’s Venice Preserved, Restoration drama is a high point in our literature, only to be equaled by Sheridan in the late 18th century, and, 100 years later, by Wilde and Shaw—interesting that the last three were all Irish.
Among the first pieces of business undertaken by the restored Stuart regime was the reopening of the playhouses that had been closed by the Puritans who hated literature almost as much as they hated life. New comedies, like Dryden’s The Wild Gallant, (1663) were as clever as they were indecent. French critics who knew something of English drama and the English critics who followed them censured English plays on several grounds. First, they did not observe the unities of time, place, and action so revered by neoclassical French writers. Secondly, the plots were often extravagant and formless, third, characters were inconsistent and seemed to alter the purpose for no good reason.
Dryden’s greatest popularity came from his comedies. His first play The Wild Gallant (1663) was not a hit, but success soon attended other efforts. Popularity as a dramatist, combined with his loyal support of the restored Charles II, secured him position as Poet Laureate in 1668. One of his finest works, Marriage a la Mode, was performed in 1672.
The play is as beautifully constructed as a Christopher Wren building. It is set in Sicily in the reign of one King Polydamas, who usurped the throne of the rightful king. A young courtier, Rhodophil, has fallen out of love with his beautiful and charming wife Doralice and is pursuing Melantha, a foolish bourgeoise who apes French manners and chases after the court. Melantha, however, has been engaged by her father to Palamede, who arrives in Sicily only to be smitten by Doralice, who has grown tired of her husband’s lack of attention—though the two play turtledove whenever anyone is around. Each man wants the other’s wife (or fiancée), and each resents the other’s attentions to his own woman but neither is willing to quarrel, since friendship brings access to the would-be mistress. It is a real Mexican stand-off.
These comic scenes are in prose, but they echo a more serious entanglement, whose scenes are in verse. Two beautiful young people, Leonidas and Palmyra, are brought to court. Leonidas, although he is the son of the rightful king, is passed off by his guardian as the son of Polydamas. I’ll spare you the complications of how the beautiful young things got lost. The guardian claims Palmyra, who really is Polydamas’ daughter, as his own. Polydamas decides that Leonidas will marry the beautiful and noble Amalthea, while Amalthea’s brother, the slimy Argaleon, is smitten by Palmyra. The trouble is that Leonidas and Palmyra are in love and Leonidas defies Polydamas. But things are no better when the guardian claims Leonidas as his own son and reveals Palmyra as Polydamas’ long-lost child. Amalthea, however, recognizes Leonidas’ true worth, prince or no prince.
This plot in verse is more serious, because the principals—Leonidas, Palmyra, and Amalthea—are all sincerely in love. Rodophil’s complaint, that familiarity with his wife has bred contempt, would seem bizarre to Leonidas and Palmyra who have been constant companions since childhood.
Marriage à la Mode is a comedy of errors or misunderstanding both in the usual sense that characters often do not understand what is going on and in the more serious sense that the two comic couples in particular do not know who they and there lovers/spouses really are. It is perfectly that the plot reaches a crescendo in a masquerade that pits Melantha and Doralice, both dressed as boys, in a verbal cat-fight.
After Rhodophil and Palamede threaten to fight a duel over each other’s flirtations, Rodophil begins to come to his senses: “Faith I am jealous, and that makes me partly suspect that I love you better than I thought….For Palamede has wit, and if he loves you, there’s something more in ye than I have found: some rich mine, for ought know, that I have not yet discovered.” Palamede comes to a similar conclusion about his bride-to-be. This change of heart precedes their decision to support Leonidas, when they realize he is the rightful king. “No subject e’er can meet/ a nobler fate, then at his Sovereign’s feet.” The subject is too serious for prose. Domestic loyalty prepares the way for political loyalty, a subtle suggestion that Roundheads and other traitors cannot be loyal to their wives. (Not a proposition the converse of which—the marital fidelity of royalists—I would like to test.)
Conclusion
I took up Dryden for two reasons: first, because I happened to be rereading him in preparation for our Summer School on the English Civil Wars; and second, because he seemed a suitable peg on which to hang a defense of neo-classicism. There are many shortcomings to neo-classicism in literature and art, but such movements serve as a necessary corrective to our own barbaric tendencies that break through the surface of civilization in ranting Jacobean drama, Donne's unreadable satires, gushy romanticism, Walt Whitman's yawping, and virtually everything published in the United States today. In putting Shakespeare alone on a pinnacle--to the exclusion of Dryden, Milton, Marvell, Pope, and Tennyson--we are also implicitly defending his vices--sloppy composition, language that is often as obscure as it is impressive, a striving for effect at the expense of form or even common sense. Our literary disease today has many phases, some of them being obscurantism, ugliness, formlessness, incoherence, and pretentiousness. The remedy, partial though it be, is a classical revival and definitely not the sort of slangy, hip pseudo-classicism pursued by people like William Arrowsmith or David Slavitt.

Reading the books at a quicker pace is welcomed - it requires more discipline on our behalf and will keep interest sustained. Having a readling list a few books out would also be helpful. This will allow for searching the books at resellers or libraries with leisure and avoid, if at all possible, having to print and read dozens of web pages a night.
I suggest that we read the erudite Thomas Molnar.

Two perhaps tangential inquiries: 1) who were the noble restoration wits, and are you employing the epithet "noble" ironically?; and 2) what is your opinion of Dryden as a translator, and of the significance of this aspect of his activity? The translations get even more neglected in college literature surveys than the rest of Dryden, but they must be relevant to his "neoclassicism" in some sense. (Partly I ask because I happen to know Dryden ONLY through his translations.)

Thank you all for the helpful responses. I shall, within a few days, post a reading list for the next few months. I'll also have a second part appended to the original piece on Dryden. Thomas Molnar, a good friend for many years and a contributor to Chronicles, is an excellent choice. Although his health is not good and he probably does not use a computer, I'll try to persuade him to answer a few questions.
Now for a few answers. The "noble" wits I had in mind were people like John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, Charles Sackville, Earl of Dorset, and Sir Charles Sedley. All three were Frenchified libertines, poets of some merit, and Rochester at least aspired to the role of aesthetic dictator. One of the great literary feuds of the age was between Dryden and some of the wits who parodied him in a farce.
Dryden is the greatest imitator of the classics in the English language. I say "imitator" because he did not wish to provide a trot but to create a parallel work, say, to the Aeneid or Juvenal's satires, in English. He was very conscious of his shortcomings, some of which derive from the nature of English, and some critics have thought his most artful verse can be found in his translations of Ovid, a poet whose limitations he acknowledged. When I used to teach the Aeneid in translation, I usually had my students read Dryden's translation. Classicists were appalled, because of Dryden's supposed inaccuracies. I always answered that those who wish to gain an accurate impression of Vergil can do only one thing, read him in Latin. Here is the beginning from an etext:
Arms, and the man I sing, who, forc'd by fate,
And haughty Juno's unrelenting hate,
Expell'd and exil'd, left the Trojan shore.
Long labors, both by sea and land, he bore,
And in the doubtful war, before he won
The Latian realm, and built the destin'd town;
His banish'd gods restor'd to rites divine,
And settled sure succession in his line,
From whence the race of Alban fathers come,
And the long glories of majestic Rome.
The fine last line translates only "atque altae moenia Romae," but the Latin has a resonance for the Roman that is not captured by "the walls of high Rome."
Finally, I should warn all readers that although I have been a lover of 17th century English literature and taught a course on English neoclassicism at Chapel Hill (long ago), I am very far from being a specialist. I read relatively little secondary stuff and have concentrated on literary texts, published letters, contemporary historians, and modern interpretors of the history.
PS It is confusing to lump Byron in with people whom he disliked. On the other hand, after attacking Scott, he responded warmly to Scott's courtesy. As a friend of Shelley, with whom he shared an admiration for the Greeks, as a liberal nationalist in politics, and as a poet who wrote all too much about his own feelings, he is correctly put into a historical category which he often transcended. Often a bad man, he was rarely petty. His role in the Greek independence movement is far more significant than is often realized.
Historians of modern Greece paint a picture of a mature and sobre Byron, who spent much of his own fortune buying weapons and subsidizing Greek troops, and used his reputation to lure others to contribute. He also appears to have given up his swaggering manner and become rather mild, a peace-maker among the warring Greek leaders. The uprising gave him a sense of purpose beyond himself. Even in the third Canto of Don Juan (written 5 years before his death) the intensity of his love for Greece inspires some of his best verse:
The mountains look on Marathon---
And Marathon looks on the sea;
And musing there an hour alone,
I dream'd that Greece might yet be free
For, standing on the Persians' grave,
I could not deem myself a slave.

I appreciate the return of the booklog. And I've just finished "All for Love". I think Molnar is a good choice; I've only read one of his books but it was interesting and thought provoking.
I don't understand choosing "Before the Dawn:...". I've read half of it so far and it reads like most scientismist works including all evolutionary works. Evolution is never defined, nor prooved; it is merely assumed. It mixes a lot of trivia with a little genetics and hangs it on a scaffold of evolution. All the comments mentioning evolution seem gratuitous: that is there is no predictive aspect to it and you could make the basic statement, leave the evolution comment out and it would not make any difference. Its basic argument is evolution's seeming only one. Namely, here's our argument and since you don't have one or one that our philosophy allows, then we must be right. A better choice, it seems to me, if science is of interest, would be Feynmann's (even though an atheist, yet one of Americas great and original scientists) essay on science and his essay on cult cargo science.
To Novalis (clever reverse for a pseudonym!): I agree on Pound. Bizarre as he often is--and nothing is more bizarre than the homage to Propertius--he helped to revive the whole concept of imitation as opposed to translation. I am happy to do a discussion of the Oresteia, on which I have lectured many times. I am currently revising my 1972 dissertation on the lyric meters of Aeschylus for publication in a monograph series.
I'll try to figure out a good way of putting up a Booklog schedule. Perhaps it could be a button on the Booklog page. For now, I am going to move on (after we finish with Dryden's two plays) to Nicholas Wade's Before the Dawn, then Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes, then Gregory the Great's Magna Moralia aka Commentary on the Book of Job--only conveniently available on the web, then Aeschylus' Oresteia, which is for my money the greatest dramatic work we know of, though a work quite alien to Anglo-American sensibilities.
I would like to discuss "Before the Dawn", though briefly, for two reasons; first, because it is a readable summary of what in general scientists in the field of human evolution are thinking these days and contains some thought-provoking theories about language, intelligence, and even race; secondly, because the logical leaps and unproved assumptions are a startling disclosure of how really irrational scientists are. It is simply not true that studying physics or biology makes one a more rational thinker. We'll do perhaps two weeks, in which we skim over a few main points. I used to study evolutionary theory in some detail, and this is an opportunity to return to the subject.
Let us stick to Dryden this week.

WRT Before the Dawn:, I don't know all the issues you plan to address. But I am particularly interested in the claim I have heard several times, namely that Darwin (and most subsequent moderns), having merely assumed a new and false notion of "chance" and thus having rejected, without argument, the ancient understanding of "chance", proceeded to produce nonsense. This ancient view of chance summed up by Aristotle with his statement that 'whatever happens always or for the most part cannot happen by chance". I also have heard that even Cicero had important things to say about chance that Darwin also ignored. At any rate I would be interested in TJF's understanding of ancient vs modern (Darwin and Wade) notions of chance. Thanks.
I was particularly struck by the sheer ease and fluidity of Dryden's blank verse. The beauty and force of his style have me wondering whether it might have been the poetry of the seventeenth century (rather than its prose) that shaped, influenced and determined the splendid prose-writers of the British eighteenth century.
I'm actually rather amazed at just how different classical and neo-classical tragedies are from the actual style of the three Greek tragedians. Classicism seems to arise out of Aristotle's theory rather than out of the plays he had considered and analyzed. While I know that Aristotle and the classicists emphasize the unity of time, space and subject within plays, why is it that all classicist plays all seem to focus on the *same* subject: namely, the need to decide between love for a person or loyalty to a ruler? On the other hand, when I read Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, it seems that their plays have a multiplicity of different subjects.
I really appreciated having the opportunity to read both *All for Love* and *Anthony and Cleopatra*. Indeed I think the two ought always to be read together--the depth of the Dryden very nicely supplements the broad scope of the Shakespeare. But something that really stuck out at me while reading Shakespeare this time: I can't help but wonder whether the commentators in their footnotes often make his lines seem much more comprehensible and sensible than they really are. As for Dryden, it was a pleasant change of pace to read beautiful poetic language whose language was instantly and unmistakeably clear. Too often (perhaps under the influence of Shakespeare) I think critics associate "great poetry" exclusively with lines that have a "multiplicity" of meanings. This leaves too much room, I think, for nonsense to creep in and take on the appearance of "deep and brilliant" verse.
I am pleased to see Dryden being rehabilitated as he is comparatively neglected of the English poets. In many instances though, he wrote flattery and meaningless lyrics.
The exceptrions our models for aspiring poets now. I recall a poetry group at university and none were familiar with hs work. What I suggested to the grouyp was to takeDryden as a model for formif not content. He is the greatest versifier in the English literature. One example is his flattery ofthe Royal painter Sir Godfry Kneller. The run on line is masterful and the sense flows down the declining verse form like a harmonious waterfall. It repays repetative reading in that it improves the acolytes sense of form into which can run his own content.
